Courtyard Harmony Homes
By Agnes Yusufu
About
Inspired by Sierra Leone’s tradition of elders teaching under a community tree, this project reimagines affordable housing. With a central courtyard symbolizing the tree, clustered units foster connection, using eco-friendly materials like rammed earth, bamboo, and timber to promote sustainability.
Project Insights
Unit Front View
The individual units showcase a blend of rammed earth, bamboo, and timber, reflecting a commitment to sustainable construction. Each two- or three-bedroom unit prioritizes simplicity and functionality while emphasizing a design that aligns with local aesthetics and environmental resilience.
Community Layout
The design emphasizes the importance of community by placing clustered homes around a central courtyard, symbolic of the traditional tree gathering space. This layout fosters connection and engagement, offering a shared space where residents can interact. The use of shared kitchens within the cluster promotes communal living, encouraging economic advantages while strengthening bonds between neighbors and reinforcing a sense of collective identity.
