Rise in the City
By Sandra Esther Bangura

About

Sierra Leone’s housing crisis, marked by high rental costs and informal settlements, is addressed through this project, which utilizes local materials to create affordable homes. Inspired by “Rise in the City” in Lesotho, the design includes shared courtyards, elevated foundations, and sustainable water systems.

Project Insights

Technical Drawing

The technical drawing illustrates the innovative use of local materials, with the foundations elevated on laterite rocks, which are abundant in the community. The design also includes a courtyard shared by three units, fostering community while saving space. Clay bricks of various shades create dynamic, undulating patterns on the facades, transforming a humble material into a striking feature. The roofs are designed to channel rainwater to central storage tanks, ensuring the community can make use of valuable water resources.

Plan Evolution

The plan evolved from the need for space efficiency and community interaction. The layout optimizes the use of land by incorporating shared spaces, such as the central courtyard, where cooking areas are located. The three units of different sizes accommodate varying family needs while maintaining a focus on shared communal living. The plan also includes spaces for communal laundry, a police post, and a health clinic, ensuring that essential services are within reach, contributing to the creation of a self-sustaining community.

Sections

The section highlights the elevation of the foundations, built using locally available laterite rocks, which enhances the durability and sustainability of the structure. The sectional view also shows the integration of roofs designed to collect rainwater for use in the community, promoting water conservation. The layout of the units ensures privacy while encouraging interaction between residents through shared outdoor spaces, reinforcing the sense of community. The sections also demonstrate the careful consideration of ventilation and natural light, ensuring comfortable living conditions year-round.
