Project Insights
Community Plan
The design tackles severe overcrowding in Freetown by creating a harmonious and functional community. Drawing inspiration from the dumbbell symbol, it integrates two interconnected elements, symbolizing strength and balance. This layout allows for efficient use of land while fostering communal living. The strategic use of local materials like timber, clay bricks, and bamboo reduces construction costs and environmental impact. Additionally, sustainable systems for water harvesting and bio-gas help address pressing sanitation issues, improving health and living conditions for residents.
Elevation of Unit
The elevation reflects the simplicity and efficiency of the design, emphasizing the use of local materials such as timber, clay bricks, and bamboo to ensure both durability and sustainability. Inspired by the “Earth School” in Senegal, the design incorporates a bamboo roof that provides natural ventilation, reducing the need for artificial cooling. The homes are elevated to minimize flooding risks, with water harvesting systems integrated into the design to provide clean water. Bio-gas systems are also included, offering an alternative source of energy while reducing waste.
