Community-Centered Housing
By Soojin Kim

About

This design prioritizes community-building with shared spaces like courtyards and outdoor cooking areas, fostering social interaction and a sense of belonging. The structure addresses local climatic challenges, incorporating pitched roofs, elevated foundations, and rainwater collection systems. The interiors are flexible, allowing spaces to adapt to the evolving needs of residents.

Project Insights

Building Plan

The building plan emphasizes shared spaces such as courtyards and outdoor cooking areas, which foster social interaction and a strong sense of community. These communal areas promote connection among residents while offering multipurpose spaces for various activities. The layout is designed to enhance the living experience by encouraging collaboration and shared responsibility within the community. The plan also takes into account local climatic conditions, integrating features like elevated foundations and pitched roofs to combat heat and heavy rainfall.

Plan Evolution

The plan evolved from the need for flexibility and adaptability in housing. It was designed to meet the evolving needs of residents, with spaces that can be adjusted over time. The initial design ensures privacy and communal integration while allowing for future expansion if required. As the community grows, the layout can evolve with the residents, adapting to changes in family size and usage. The integration of rainwater collection systems also evolved from the need to create a self-sustaining community that can withstand seasonal challenges, ensuring water security during dry periods.

Technical Prototypes 3D

The 3D technical prototypes bring the design to life, showcasing the key features of the building plan. These models highlight the adaptive use of space, from the flexible interiors to the multipurpose communal areas. The prototypes demonstrate the elevation of foundations and the pitched roof structure, designed to combat heavy rainfall and heat. The rainwater collection system is also detailed, showcasing how the system channels water into storage tanks, benefiting the community with a sustainable water supply. These prototypes visualize how the design works in practice, ensuring that the project is both functional and adaptable.
